Social Anxiety: More Than Shyness
Social Anxiety Disorder involves an intense fear of being judged, embarrassed, or humiliated in social situations — and it's one of the most commonly misunderstood anxiety conditions because it can look from the outside like someone simply being quiet or introverted.
Shyness vs. Social Anxiety Disorder
Shyness is a personality trait. Social anxiety is a clinical condition — the difference is in the intensity of the fear, the physical symptoms it triggers, and the degree to which it gets in the way of daily life. Someone with social anxiety doesn't just prefer smaller gatherings; they may avoid them entirely, dread them for days or weeks in advance, or endure them with significant distress.
What It Can Look Like
- Fear of saying something embarrassing or being negatively evaluated
- Avoidance of social situations, speaking up, or being the center of attention
- Physical symptoms in social settings — blushing, sweating, trembling, racing heart, nausea
- Intense anticipatory anxiety before social events
- Reviewing and replaying interactions afterward with a critical lens
- Difficulty with performance situations: presentations, meetings, phone calls, eating in public
A Note on Performance Anxiety
Some people experience social anxiety specifically in performance situations — public speaking, being observed while working — rather than in general social interactions. This is a recognized subtype and responds well to treatment.
