Generalized Anxiety Disorder: When Worry Becomes the Baseline

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) isn't just being a worrier. It's a persistent, hard-to-control anxiety that spreads across most areas of life and sticks around even when there's no obvious reason for it.

What Makes It Different from Everyday Worry

Most people worry sometimes — about work, health, finances, relationships. With GAD, the worry is out of proportion to the actual situation, jumps quickly from one topic to another, and feels nearly impossible to switch off. The defining feature isn't what someone worries about so much as how much and how unrelentingly.

To meet the diagnostic threshold for GAD, symptoms need to be present more days than not for at least six months and cause real interference with daily life — not just occasional discomfort.

Common Symptoms

  • Excessive worry about several different areas of life simultaneously
  • Difficulty controlling the worry even when you recognize it's excessive
  • Restlessness or feeling on edge
  • Fatigue that isn't explained by poor sleep alone
  • Difficulty concentrating — mind going blank
  • Irritability
  • Muscle tension, headaches, or physical tightness
  • Sleep disturbance — trouble falling or staying asleep

How We Approach It at Harborlight

A comprehensive evaluation looks at the full picture — how long symptoms have been present, what areas of life they're affecting, and whether anything medical might be contributing (thyroid issues, for instance, can mimic anxiety closely). From there, a plan might include medication, practical tools for managing the worry cycle, and regular follow-up to track what's working.

If you're in crisis or having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) anytime, or go to your nearest emergency room. This page is educational and isn't a substitute for emergency care.
