Postpartum Depression: Beyond the Baby Blues
The "baby blues" — tearfulness, mood swings, feeling overwhelmed in the first couple of weeks after birth — are common and usually resolve on their own. Postpartum depression (PPD) is different: more intense, longer-lasting, and it deserves real treatment.
Signs to Watch For
PPD can begin anytime in the first year after birth, not just in the first few weeks. Signs include:
- Persistent sadness, anxiety, or a sense of dread
- Overwhelming fatigue that goes beyond normal newborn exhaustion
- Difficulty bonding with your baby
- Intrusive or distressing worries
- Withdrawing from family or friends
- Feelings of inadequacy or failure as a parent
- In severe cases, thoughts of harming yourself or your baby — this is rare, but it's an emergency. Call 988 or go to the nearest ER right away.
You're Not Alone, and It's Not Your Fault
Hormonal shifts, sleep deprivation, and the sheer identity upheaval of new parenthood all play a role. PPD is extremely common and highly treatable — it isn't a reflection of how much you love your baby or how capable you are as a parent.
How We Treat It at Harborlight
We take into account questions specific to this period of life — including breastfeeding and medication safety — and coordinate with your OB or your baby's pediatrician when it's helpful. Medication options are reviewed individually based on your situation, and we keep a closer eye with regular follow-up during this particularly vulnerable stretch.
If you're in crisis or having thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) anytime, or go to your nearest emergency room.
For non-emergency perinatal mental health support: the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline at 1-833-852-6262 (1-833-TLC-MAMA) and the Postpartum Support International HelpLine at 1-800-944-4773 are both free, confidential, and available to callers and texters in the U.S. This page is educational and isn't a substitute for emergency care.
