Major Depressive Disorder: What It Looks Like and How It's Treated
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is more than a rough patch — it's a clinical diagnosis with specific, recognizable features that go on for weeks and interfere with daily life.
Recognizing the Symptoms
MDD is generally diagnosed when someone experiences a persistent low mood or a loss of interest in things they normally enjoy, most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks — alongside several of the symptoms below.
- Persistent sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness
- Loss of interest or pleasure in activities (anhedonia)
- Significant changes in sleep — too little or too much
- Changes in appetite or weight
- Fatigue or noticeably low energy
- Difficulty concentrating, thinking, or making decisions
- Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
- Moving or speaking more slowly, or feeling physically restless
- Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide
What Contributes to It
Depression is rarely caused by one single thing. It usually reflects a combination of genetics and family history, neurochemical and hormonal shifts, chronic stress or past trauma, certain medical conditions (thyroid disorders are a common example), some medications, and major life changes.
How We Approach Treatment at Harborlight
We start with a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation that looks at your full picture — medical history, current stressors, and what you've already tried — before building a personalized plan. That plan may include medication management, practical lifestyle and behavioral strategies, coordination with a therapist if you're already in counseling, and regular follow-up so we can adjust course as things change.
If you're in crisis or having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) anytime, or go to your nearest emergency room. This page is educational and isn't a substitute for emergency care.
